Saturday, October 9th.
Southern League:
CITY v BRENTFORD,
at St. James's Park.

A morning of dark clouds and overcast skies produced the expected rain in the afternoon, but despite the miserable weather, and the fact that Exeter City had not won any of their previous matches, there was an attendance of 7000.
Exeter made three alterations to the team to face Brentford, the most important being the introduction of Harrison, late of Manchester City, in the place of McGuigan, who is suffering from an injured knee, at centre-forward. Green, who played in the first two matches, both in London, replaced Copestake at outside-right, and Hartley returned to the half-back line to the exclusion of Ambler.

CITY:
Crossthwaite; Craig, and Jones; Atkinson, Chadwick, and Hartley; Green, Watson, Harrison, Bell, and Garside.

BRENTFORD:
Ling; Rhodes, and Stewart; Jay, Hamilton, and Riley; Bartlett, Rushton, Bowman, Reid, and Anderson.

Referee: Mr W.E.Russell, Swindon.

The game opened sensationally, for in the very first minute, after a corner had been taken on the Exeter City left, a Brentford defender handled in the penalty area, and Chadwick scored from the spot. Brentford fought back well and initiated several attacks, and in one of them Bowman wasted an easy chance by firing wide. With the ground now being swept by heavy rain the climatic conditions made it difficult for players to secure a firm foothold on the greasy turf, but the game was often interesting. Two minutes before the interval Bell scored the City's second goal amid protests from the Brentford players concerning the legality of this point, but to no avail.
Half-time: City 2-0.
The second half had barely commenced when Bell scored Exeter City's third goal, but Brentford were full of fight and determination, and their arrears were reduced by Reid, who beat Crossthwaite with a fast, rising shot. Bell, however, rattled home a fourth goal, and thereby performing the first "hat-trick" of the season by an Exeter player.
Exeter City 4 goals, Brentford 1.
