NORTHAMPTON TOWN v EXETER CITY
The meeting of the Northampton and Exeter teams on the County ground was marred by an unfortunate accident, which was probably responsible for the "Cobblers" having to be content with a share of the spoils.
In the first few minutes the two captains, McCartney and Watson, knocked their heads together in attempting to head the ball, and McCartney had to retire with a bad cut on his forehead, and slight concussion. Northampton had to play the remainder of the first half without their captain, and although he returned after the interval with two stitches, he was not his usual self, and Northampton obviously suffered from this handicap. Northampton were also without the services of Bonthron, who is under suspension, and the right-back position was given to Brittan. During McCartney's enforced absence Lessons dropped back to centre-half, leaving a man short in the forward line.
THE TOWN:
Thorpe; Brittan, and Lloyd-Davies; Manning, McCartney, and McDiarmid; Whittaker, Walker, Lessons, Lewis, and Freeman.
THE CITY:
Crossthwaite; Craig, and Jones; Atkinson, Chadwick, and Hartley; Green, Watson, Harrison, Bell, and Garside.
Referee: Mr W.H.Horsfield, of London.
The game was not a brilliant one, and all things considered, a draw was a fair result. The Northampton forwards were more dangerous in the second half, but the City defence pulled them through. Chadwick played a fine game on one of his old grounds, while Jones and Craig were reliable defenders.
Result:
Northampton 0, Exeter City 0.
PLYMOUTH LEAGUE:
