PORTSMOUTH v. EXETER CITY
Southern League Match
at Fratton Park
For the first time this season a large number of the Grecians' supporters accompanied their team to an away League match, namely to Fratton Park, Portsmouth. A fine rain was falling at the naval town when the excursionists arrived, about noon, and continued throughout the afternoon. Tierney travelled with the City team, but upon arrival at Portsmouth Chadwick decided to turn out, much to the satisfaction of the local crowd. Portsmouth made one alteration from last Saturday, namely McMahon for Hakin, the former Argyle player.
POMPEY: Cope; Warner, and Clipstone; Beaumont, Shufflebotham, and Yates; Birtles, Haycock, Kirby, McMahon, and Dix.
Referee: Mr A.D.Milton, of London.
THE CITY:
Crossthwaite; Craig, and Jones; Atkinson, Chadwick, and Hartley; Green, Watson, Harrison, Bell, and Garside.
There was only a small attendance when the sides turned out, but Watson's brigade got a rousing reception from the enthusiastic Exonians present. Watson won the toss, and played with the driving rain at the City's back.
After Craig had robbed Dix on the halfway line the City were given a free kick, and for some minutes they were on the attack. Kirby at length sent out to Dix, for the latter to be pulled up for offside. A fine dribble by Chadwick gave Bell a chance, but he over-ran the ball, which had quickly become slippery.
PORTSMOUTH'S GOALS:
Five minutes from the start Portsmouth won a corner, and after a partial save by Crossthwaite, Haycock netted. Two minutes later Craig fouled Dix, and from the free kick Kirby headed in.
Despite losing two goals the City were playing by far the better football, and Cope had to save twice from Harrison, and once from Jones. But Kirby headed the third goal from Dix's centre, and Haycock put on the fourth. Harrison scored for Exeter in the second half, and the match ended:
Portsmouth 4 goals, Exeter City 1.
