Bristol City (h)
Wednesday, November 3rd.
Friendly Match at St. James's Park.
EXETER'S FIRST DIVISION OPPONENTS.
Exeter City v. Bristol City
An attractive "friendly" match was arranged for Exeter City at St. James's Park, the visitors being Bristol City. The Bristol club came into existence in 1894 and joined the Southern League three years later. After finishing as runners-up to Southampton in 1900-01 election to the second division of the English League followed, and further promotion was secured at the end of the 1905-06 season, during which they won the championship so easily that only two matches were lost throughout the campaign. They were immediately successful in the top bracket, being runners up to the champions, Newcastle United, in 1906-07, but dropped to tenth in the following year. In 1908-09, apart from finishing eighth in the League, they reached the final tie for the English Cup, and were only beaten by the smallest of margins, 1-0, by Manchester United. The following teams lined up for today's match:
EXETER CITY
H.Crossthwaite J.Crelley E.Jones J.Atkinson A.Chadwick P.HartleyT.Green R.Watson R.Harrison J.Bell J.Garside
inside right centre
BRISTOL CITY
J.Clegg R. Young J.Cottle C.R.Marr
W.Wedlock A.Spear F.W.Staniforth
S.A.Gilligan J.Cowell A.D.BurtonnR.Hardy
Although only a "friendly" encounter both sides played at their full strength, and some fast, bright football resulted. The Grecians, however, proved too clever for their famous First Division visitors. Bell scored twice for Exeter, and Gilligan once for Bristol in the first half. In the second half Garside added two more goals for Exeter, and although Bristol made several dangerous advances they were thwarted every time by Crossthwaite, who kept goal in masterly fashion. Result:
Exeter City 4 goals, Bristol City 1.
