ENGLISH CUP:
EXETER CITY v NUNHEAD.

Exeter City opened their English Cup campaign this afternoon at St. James's Park, their opponents being Nunhead, a strong London amateur team. Last season the Grecians had to fight their way through all the preliminary rounds, but this season they were excused until the fourth stage of the competition, which will be followed in a fortnight's time by the last qualifying round.
The weather conditions were perfect, and the ground was in splendid condition. The kick-off being an early one (2.30), the crowd was not a particularly big one at the start. It was considerably increased, how ever, as the game progressed. Nunhead were first out, wearing blue and white, of the Manchester United pattern. They appeared a heavy well set up side, and certainly heavier than Exeter City.

CITY:
Crossthwaite; Crelley, and Jones; Atkinson, Chadwick, and Hartley; Green, Watson, Harrison, Bell, and Garside.
NUNHEAD:
A.Griffiths; F.Muncey, and H.W.Head; C.A.Fisher, F.C.Symons, and S.J.Love;
R.Dilley, S.Sanders, A.Humphreys, C.Stanfield, O.Wieck.

Referee: Pfaff, Weston-super-Mare.

Nunhead won the toss, and Watson was set to face the sun. Harrison started the game promptly to time, and Watson, in attempting a long pass forward, sent the ball over the line. Chadwick checked Symons, and then Crelley, receiving a back pass from Atkinson, gave the ball to Green, who veered in but shot hopelessly wide. After five minutes' play Bell got possession, and dodging through, opened the score with a hard straight drive. Midfield play followed until Bell got the ball fifteen yards out and again fired in. The ball struck the crossbar and appeared to bounce in, but Griffiths scooped it out, and despite appeals for a goal the game was allowed to go on. In the next minute Nunhead were penalised for fouling, and Chadwick easily beat Griffiths from the "spot". The City had begun as if they were going to win by another Weymouth score, but the amateurs settled down, and before half-time they had reduced the lead through their inside-left, Stanfield.
Half-time: City 2 goals, Nunhead 1.

Nunhead had put up a plucky defence in the first half, but after the change-over Exeter monopolised the game, scoring five more goals through Atkinson, Harrison, Bell (2), and Watson.
Result:
Exeter City  7-1 Nunhead

Wednesday, November 24th 1909.
CITY V THE ARGYLE:
At St. James's Park: Friendly Match

EXETER CITY 2 PLYMOUTH ARGYLE 1.

For the "friendly match" at Exeter both sides were nearly at full strength, and some excellent football was seen. The Argyle, playing against a bright sun, obtained an early lead when Lamb beat Crossthwaite with an angled shot. The Grecians rallied, and the Plymouth goal had some remarkable escapes as the shots rained in on Sutcliffe from all directions, but the old International was equal to all demands. At last Copestake got through to level the scores, and with twenty five minutes left Watson drew Sutcliffe out of his goal, and passed to Green for the winger to score the deciding goal. There was an attendance of about 2000.
THE CITY:
Crossthwaite; Craig, and Crelley; Ambler, Tierney, and Hartley; Green, Harrison, Watson, Bell, and Copestake.
THE ARGYLE:
Sutcliffe; Fagan, and Atterbury; Simmonds, Evenson, and Boyd;
Griffiths, Burch, Hindmarsh, Wood, and Lamb.
