SOUTHERN LEAGUE:
SWINDON TOWN v EXETER CITY:

The Exeter City party travelled to Swindon with little hope of beating the "Railwaymen", who appear to have played to the best of their form in recent matches. It will also be remembered that Exeter were soundly beaten to the tune of four clear goals in the recent Charity Cup match at Swindon. Everything therefore pointed to the likelihood of a victory for the Railwaymen, whose new players this season include Skiller, late of Aston Villa, Silto, from Barnsley, Wheatcroft, from Reading, and McCulloch, from the Park Avenue club, Bradford. Chadwick could not play owing to the injury he met with in the cup match against Nunhead, but Atkinson, who was also hurt on that same occasion, was fit again. Hartley and Crelley, who suffered slight injuries in the match against Plymouth Argyle on Wednesday, were left out, and their places filled by Jones and Ambler. Rain fell heavily at Swindon practically throughout the morning, and the ground was slippery as a consequence. The weather also had a material effect on the size of the crowd, which was a small one for Swindon.

Swindon were out first, and were quickly followed by the City, who met with an excellent reception. Watson won the toss, and Exeter got going; Bell darted through and sent a fine pass to the inside-right, who transferred the ball to Atkinson. Atkinson shot for goal straight away and Skiller fielded the ball chest high.
Fleming was halted in midfield but Walker got the ball and skied a huge shot to Crossthwaite, who saved under the bar. Jefferson had a clear run through when Jones miskicked, and it looked odds on a goal, but the Swindon winger sent his shot wide of the posts. Jefferson again disappointed his colleagues when he went through on his own and Shot wide with three men waiting for the ball. Bell and Garside led an attack that threatened danger, but Bell was finally pulled up for off side. Harrison was robbed by Walker, and then Fleming spoiled a good chance by shooting too hard, the ball sailing well over the bar. SWINDON ATTACKS DANGEROUS:
The rain had stopped by now, and although facing the sun Swindon were pressing in very dangerous fashion, keeping the City penned in their own half for minutes on end. The City goalkeeper saved well from Fleming after the English International had made a characteristic run, and two abortive corners followed in Swindon's favour. Crossthwaite also saved from Lavery in smart fashion, and was plainly on his best behaviour following recent criticism, but eventually the Exeter goal fell to a shot from Wheatcroft, who met a centre from Jefferson first time after the move had been initiated by Fleming. Swindon continued to have the best of the game, and a free kick by Tout went over the bar.
Half-time:
Swindon Town 1 goal, Exeter City nil.
With the conditions now in their favour Swindon's superiority was even more apparent in the second half, and had it not been for the goalkeeping of Crossthwaite the City might have been two or three goals down. After Wheatcroft had missed badly when put clean through by Fleming, there was a mix-up in the Exeter defence between Jones and Ambler, and in the general scramble which followed it looked as though Jones had headed the ball through his own goal. In the last five minutes Fleming ran right through on his own and drew Crossthwaite out, dribbling the ball into the unguarded net. But the City were not entirely done for. Two corners were forced at the Swindon end, and from the second Tierney beat Skiller all ends up from fifteen yards' range
Result: Swindon 3 goals, Exeter City 1.

PLYMOUTH AND DISTRICT LEAGUE:
Six goals were shared between the Reserves and the East Surrey Regi ment at St. James's Park, before a crowd of just over a thousand. The City were the first to score, through Hunt putting the ball into his own goal, but Newson and Yates then scored for the soldiers. Hopkins equalised for the City, but Newson again put the Surreys in front. In the second half McGuigan beat Hunt with a fine shot to level the score. Fenwick captained the Reserves, in whose team there were several alterations.
Reserves:- Sturge; Heppell, White; Pym, Oliver, Fenwick; Bates, Hopkins, McGuigan, Bevan, and Copestake.
East Surrey Regiment:- Hunt; Paton, Stevenson; Murden, May, Marks; Howe, Yates, Drummer, Collier, and Newson.
