SOUTHERN LEAGUE MATCH
AT THE CUP FINAL GROUND
Exeter Beaten by Crystal Palace
CRYSTAL PALACE 3 EXETER CITY 0:
There was not much good football at the Cup Final enclosure, the heavy ground sprinkled with sand being difficult to play on. Exeter City put up a gallant fight against a better team for over an hour, and did not deserve to be defeated by such a wide margin. The City, following their midweek Cup-tie, were without Chadwick, Crossthwaite, Harrison, and Bell. Crossthwaite, however, was not badly missed, as his deputy, Sturge, put up a very sound display. Bulcock, who played for Exeter City last season, was at left-back in the Palace team.
CRYSTAL PALACE:
Johnson Collyer Bulcock Spottiswoode Clark Hughes Griffin Payne Williams Garratt Woodger
Referee: Mr J.T.Howcroft, of Bolton.
Garside McGuigan
Green Watson Copestake Hartley
Tierney Atkinson Jones Crelley Sturge
EXETER CITY:
The chance of the first half went to Payne, for when Sturge had to run out he had an empty goal to aim at, but his shot went over the top. Crelley and Sturge were responsible for Crystal Palace being unable to score before the interval, and when the game was resumed the Exeter forwards did their best work, and Johnson had to dash out to prevent Green from scoring. When the second half had been in progress for about 20 minutes, Garratt made a fine run, drew the defence out of position, and passed to Hughes, who ran line, and centred almost from the corner-flag to Williams, who headed ward and easily beat Sturge with a low shot. Ten minutes later Woodger made a characteristic sprint from the half-way through. Two minutes before the finish Garratt again got away on the Palace right wing, and from his pass Williams scored at close range, giving
Sturge no chance of saving. The top positions in the Southern League have fluctuated several times this season. Crystal Palace are now top, having won 13 and drawn 3 of the 21 games so far played. It is the third time Exeter City have encountered the League leaders, they having met New Brompton when they led the League, on October 2nd, and Queen's Park Rangers, who were in a similar position on October 30th.
The attendance at the Crystal Palace was poor, considering the excellent playing record of the club, only about 5000 turning up.
Final score:
Crystal Palace 3 goals, Exeter City nil.
PLYMOUTH AND DISTRICT LEAGUE:
City Reserves v Liskeard.
In soaking rain at St. James's Park, before a small attendance. The visitors included Dingle for Lee at inside-left. Bates opened the score for the Reserves, who were leading by this goal at the interval. In the second half Wiseman equalised after 10 minutes' play, Drew put the Reserves in front again five minutes later, and Fenwick, with a long shot, scored the third goal.
Result:
City Reserves 3 goals, Liskeard 1.
City:- W.Wells; Fenwick, Heppell; E. Wells, Oliver, Pym; Drew, Bevan, Hopkins, White, and Bates.
Liskeard: Hodge; Richards, Deacon; Sellars, C.Blaney, Coath; Kressinger, K.Blaney, Wiseman, Dingle, and Pearce.
