Luton (h)
Saturday, December 18th 1909.
SOUTHERN LEAGUE:
EXETER CITY V LEYTON.
One of the best crowds of the season, about 8000, witnessed an entertaining match at St. James's Park, in brilliantly fine weather. Exeter City had to make some team alterations because of injuries, and gave the centre-forward position to P.C.Evans, the Ellacombe and Plymouth Argyle amateur. Hartley replaced McGuigan at inside-left, with Tierney reappearing in the half-back line.
EXETER CITY:
Crossthwaite; Crelley and Jones; Tierney, Chadwick, and Atkinson; Green, Watson, Evans, Hartley, and Copestake.
LEYTON:
Whitbourne; Busby and Longworth; Buchanan, Morrison, and Gray; Durrant, Robertson, Renneville, Ryder, and Kirwan.
Referee:- Mr Platt, of Weston-super-Mare.
Some very bright and enterprising football was featured during most of the first half, but Leyton were slightly the better side and held the balance of play. Crossthwaite played a brilliant game in goal, and saved the Grecians on several occasions. Exeter, however, took the lead after fifteen minutes, by means of a penalty which Chadwick converted. The Leyton players protested against the penalty, which was given for a foul on Evans, but to no avail.
HALF TIME:
EXETER CITY 1, LEYTON 0
It was Chadwick's resourcefulness which led to Exeter's second goal. Noticing that Evans was unmarked he slipped the ball through to him, and as Whitbourne advanced Evans ran through and scored. Leyton, however, were not discouraged by this second reverse, and it was not long before Renneville reduced the lead following some clever work on their right wing.
RESULT:
EXETER CITY 2-1 LEYTON
P.C.Evans' debut was a conspicuous success, and his goal a reward for opportunism. He was among strangers, but adapted himself to his new colleagues in a most praiseworthy manner. Chadwick and Atkinson worked hard and Crelley had an excellent game at right-back.
