EXETER CITY v CROYDON COMMON.
Southern League Match
at St. James's Park

Exeter City 3, Croydon 1.
By defeating Croydon Common on the St. James's Park ground Exeter City won their third consecutive League victory, and have thereby strengthened their position. The Grecians are now fifteenth in the table, with 19 points, having played 23 matches. On the run of the play Exeter were worthy winners, and should have defeated their visitors by a larger margin. In the first half Exeter did a lot of attacking, but ineptitude in front of goal lost them a number of chances. During the first fifteen minutes there was only one shot of any note, and that was a hefty drive by Bell, which missed the target.
TWO QUICK GOALS
No improvement was seen in shooting until Bell opened the scoring, and with the ice broken Hartley quickly shot a second goal. By two to nothing Exeter led at the interval.
Croydon gave an improved display in the second half, and Yenson, switching to centre-forward, pulled the line together very well. The reward for their persistence eventually came when Hodgkinson broke away on the wing with the Exeter defence appealing for offside, and his centre from the touch-line was easily netted by Hesham. For a time it looked as if the visitors might get themselves on equal terms, but the issue was by Watson, with a brilliantly executed third goal. The City captain beat several opponents, held to the ball until Hewitson came out to meet him, and calmly steered the leather into an unguarded net.
