Southern League
New Brompton (h)

Saturday, February 12th. 1910.
SOUTHERN LEAGUE:
CITY V NEW BROMPTON.

Football at St. James's Park:
City Win 3-2
HOPPERS RECOVER TOO LATE :

The City were rather fortunate in defeating New Brompton at Exeter by the odd goal in five, for the missing of a penalty by the Hoppers in the first half undoubtedly lost them a point. Chadwick reappeared at centre-half in the City team, whilst Craig deputised for Crelley at right-back, the ex-Evertonian having been I called to his home in Liverpool on account of family illness. New Brompton, however, suffered more in respect to absentees, for they had Batcup, Reynolds, Nobbs, and Reid away.
The attendance was in the region of six thousand when the teams appeared.

NEW BROMPTON:
From a spectator's point of view the game was an interesting one, there seldom being a dull moment throughout the whole 90 minutes.
PExeter commenced convincingly, and was no surprise when, after fifteen minutes' play Green opened the scoring from centre by a Copestake. The Grecians completely baffled New Brompton for some considerable time, and a mix-up between Luff, Sutherland and Johnson allowed Copestake to dash in and put the ball in the net for the second point. Barely had the game been resumed before Garside shot a third goal, the ball going into the net off the goalkeeper's legs. Previously to the scoring of this goal, however, New Brompton were awarded a penalty Satterthwaite, who took the kick, over the bar.
Resuming three goals in arrears the Hoppers pulled themselves together, and after the interval played a considerably improved type of game. First Court reduced the lead, and then following a bout of clever passing between their forwards Taylor added a second point, bringing them to within a goal of the City's lead. Unfortunately the concluding stages of the game were spoiled by a number of unnecessary fouls.
Final score:
Exeter City 3 goals, New Brompton 2.

NOTES ON THE GAME
The City attack fell off considerably in the second part of the game, and combined movements were rarely seen. Copestake and Watson were the most dangerous wing, but Bell was quite off form, and his poor display had a rather desultory effect on the play of Garside. Green worked hard, but he ran up against a powerful half-back in Strang, who invariably robbed the centre-forward before he had time to get the ball away. Of the City half-backs Atkinson was prominent, and his speed was a very useful asset to him against such a fast winger as Pickett. Hartley played a bustling game on the opposite wing, and in the centre Chadwick, despite his frequent absences this season, was still as sound as ever. Craig, replacing Crelley, was the better back, and Crossthwaite kept a good goal. New Brompton were a team of two distinct moods. After losing three early goals, and seeming to be already beaten, they staged a grand recovery after the interval, and nearly saved the game.

P.C Evans selected for Wales Amateurs

P.C.Evans, the Ellacombe centre-forward, who played a couple of matches for Exeter City's first team earlier this season, has been selected for the Welsh amateur international eleven against England's amateurs, at the Huddersfield Town ground on February 19th.
