BRENTFORD v EXETER CITY
Brentford team: Ling, Rhodes, and Buxton; Richards, Hamilton, and Blackhall; Walker, Bartlett, Reid, Hollinrake, and Anderson.
Exeter City: Crossthwaite; Craig and Jones; Ambler, Chadwick, and Hartley; Copestake, Watson, Green, Bell, and Garside.
Playing clean, forceful football, Brentford scored a notable win against Exeter City at Griffin Park. On the home side there was much to admire apart from the result, and if Brentford were only to give a few more displays on similar lines they would find that their gates would average more than the 4,000, which was their total today. At the start the Londoners opened rather shakily, and with the City right wing making frequent dashes for goal, things did not look very promising for them. It was a critical time, but Buxton, who worked like a Trojan, and Ling, who was an excellent goalkeeper, kept the Exeter forwards at bay between them. At length it occurred to the Brentford centre-forward that he had a left-wing on the field. Swinging the ball out in that direction he enabled Hollinrake and Anderson to get the better of Jones for the first time in the match. When Hollinrake was tackled by Chadwick he passed to Anderson, who went on alone, tricked Jones again, and ended by scoring a fine goal. A few minutes later the same wing again broke away, except that on this occasion it was Hollinrake who did the scoring from a pass by his outside man. Interval:
Brentford 2 City 0.
EXETER WERE WEAK
After the interval the game went more than ever in favour of the London side. Walker had a glorious chance of adding to the total, but he skied the ball with Crossthwaite out of position. Reid, however, scored a third goal, and from then onwards Brentford were never in any danger. Exeter City were very weak, and fell away alarmingly after a promising beginning.
Final score:
Brentford 3 goals, Exeter City nil.
