PLYMOUTH ARGYLE v EXETER CITY

Benefit Match for John Willie Sutcliffe

J.W.Sutcliffe, the famous International goalkeeper, came south to join Plymouth Argyle in 1904, after a long and distinguished career with Bolton Wanderers and a season each with Millwall and Manchester United. Since then he has given equally good service to the cause of Plymouth Argyle.
Despite having been in the game for well over twenty seasons, he is still a first-class goalkeeper, and one of the very few players who have been "capped" by England at both Rugby and Soccer. For most of his time at Bolton he was the last line in that celebrated defence of Sutcliffe, Somerville, and Jones, easily the best rearguard Bolton have ever possessed. He won five International Caps for England at soccer between 1893 and 1903, and previously played for his country as a Rugby threequarter whilst a member of Heckmondwike, Yorkshire. It was the fifth meeting of the Devonshire clubs this season, and so far the honours had been shared. The Argyle won the home and away League matches at Christmas, but previously Exeter had beaten the Argyle at Home Park in the Southern Charity Cup competition, and at St. James's Park in a friendly on November 24th.

Teams:
ARGYLE: Sutcliffe; Fagan, Butler; McCormick, Wilcox, Baker; Stock, Raymond, Wood, Burch, and Lamb. CITY: Crossthwaite; Craig, Letheren; Hartley, Ambler, Tierney;Green, Singlehurst, McGuigan, Garside, and White.

John Sutcliffe, the Argyle's veteran goalkeeper, will reap the benefit of the proceeds of the match at Home Park today, but the weather was atrocious and spectators exceedingly few.

Neither was the game very interesting, for Exeter City had to play ten men nearly the whole of the time, owing to an injury sustained by McGuigan. Burch, for Plymouth, scored the only goal of the first half and after the change of ends Wood quickly added two more. Towards the end Hartley netted the ball for Exeter, who retired beaten by 3 - 1.
