Watford v Exeter City.
WATFORD'S DISCOMFITURE
City Win at Cassio Road:
For the first time since losing 3-0 to Coventry on October 30th Watford were beaten at home, and for the first time this season the City returned from an away ground with two points. Exeter's feat is the more praiseworthy considering they had to take the field without Atkinson and Garside, both unfit as the result of injuries sustained last week. On the other hand it is only fair to Watford to say that although the City won in such pronounced fashion their first two goals were of the simplest description, Biggar being at fault on both occasions. The match opened tamely, and the lack of spirit shown was quite remarkable. The ball was lobbed aimlessly about, and there was a complete lack of concerted movements, or combined play. Exeter City, without showing much cleverness, were at least very determined, and once ahead meant keeping there. Bell and Watson were the most dangerous forwards and McGuigan scored two goals to signal his return to the first team. The half backs were steady and safe, both backs kicked soundly and Crossthwaite's goalkeeping was faultless.
WATFORD:- Biggar; Lockett, Skinner; Fayers, Kent, Grieve; Fyfe, Becton, Maclaine, C.White, and Squires.
CITY: Crossthwaite; Crelley, Jones; Tierney, Ambler, Hartley; Green, Watson, McGuigan, Bell, and Copestake.
Referee: Mr F.W.Barton.
There was a poor attendance, less than two thousand turning up, a possible reflection on the West Hertfordshire club's lack of success this season. In the first minute Fyfe had a golden chance of opening the score when he found himself close to goal, but he failed to control the ball and was easily robbed by Crelley. At the other end Copestake centred to Bell, whose header bounced off the crossbar and was cleared. After ten minutes' play Exeter won a corner, from which Watson got the ball and forced it past Biggar from close range. The goalkeeper was to blame for this goal through hesitation and then failing to get down to Watson's shot. Watford were soon on level terms, Kent heading through following a corner. After these two early goals the play deteriorated, and for a time tended to be aimless, both sides being equally guilty. It seemed as if the scores would be level at the interval, when suddenly Green beat two opponents and transferred the ball into the goalmouth. The Watford goalkeeper was deceived by a slow pass, and McGuigan tapped through a second point.
HALF-TIME: CITY 2 WATFORD 1
Squires was the only Watford forward who had any ideas of shooting, flashing oblique shot. For a while Watford showed some improvement, and upon the restart he made Crossthwaite go full length to divert a but soon faded away. Grieve and Fyfe changed places, but the side went from bad to worse. Then from a beautifully judged cross by Watson, McGuigan met the ball first time at five yards' range, Biggar having practically no chance with a fast rising shot. With Exeter now two goals in front Watford again changed their team around, and Locket went up among his forwards, Becton dropping back. Both sides then adopted the "one back" policy with the result that the game became more ragged than ever. Nothing further was scored, the final result being:-
Exeter City 3 goals, Watford 1.
Note:- White, the Watford inside-left, is a brother of Tom White, who assisted Exeter City last season, and is now also on Watford's books.
