Friendly
Plymouth Argyle (a)
Wednesday, April 13th 1910.
Friendly Match
at Home Park, Plymouth.
ARGYLE BEAT EXETER AGAIN:
FOUR-NIL:
This friendly took place at Home Park in a deluge of rain, and as a result of the weather only attracted a very small company. Plymouth Argyle fielded a more representative team than the City, and held the whip hand from the start. It was not long before they opened the scoring through Hindmarsh.
Exeter found the heavy wind and rain against them a big handicap, and after the Pilgrims had narrowly missed increasing their score, Hindmarsh ran through on his own to net a brilliant second goal. Despite these reverses Exeter pressed, but their forwards were weak when presented with the ball anywhere near goal. Plymouth came again, and Broome added another goal, enabling them to lead 3-0 at half time.
Exeter did slightly better on resuming, but the home defence was very sound, and Sutcliffe had little to do. The play degenerated into a scramble on the waterlogged pitch, and for a long time the match was of a poor standard for professional teams. The City forwards were completely off colour, and the Argyle little better. However, Plymouth came forward once more in determined fashion and in a sustained attack Burch headed their fourth goal.
ARGYLE:- Sutcliffe; Fagan, Butler; McCormick, Wilcox, Simmonds; Griffiths, Burch, Hindmarsh, Broome, and Lamb.
CITY:- Crossthwaite; Crelley, White; Tierney, Ambler, Letheren; Green, Atkinson, McGuigan, Hartley, and Drew.
