EXETER GETTING WORSE
Southend's Dashing Display

For their visit to Thames-mouth the Grecians restored Atkinson to his proper position in the half-back line, allowing Watson to resume as Copestake's partner on the right wing.
Southend, who were without their skipper, Molyneux, reintroduced Owen at centre-half and gave a trial to H.Childs, a local amateur, at outside-left. The Southend players, realising the dangerous position of the club near the bottom of the League table, put the issue beyond doubt in the first quarter of an hour by scoring twice. Exeter City, with a weak forward line, seldom appeared likely to score. After five minutes Emery gathered a weak clearance from Crelley and shot hard against the junction of the post and crossbar. The ball then rebounded to King, who completely beat Crossthwaite from ten yards. Ten minutes later the City goalkeeper was called upon to save a header from Wright just under the bar, but he marred a fine effort to clear by carrying the ball too many paces and giving away a free kick. Wright "sold the dummy" to the Exeter defence by pretending to run up and take a shot at goal, but instead he passed to Emery, barely a yard away, and the latter gave Crossthwaite no chance with a direct shot. Crossing over with two goals lead Southend took matters easily, and although Exeter did better in this half they never troubled Toone. One effort from Childs, late in the game, deserves special mention. Racing away and outwitting Atkinson and Crelley, he drove the ball in at lightning speed past Crossthwaite, whence it hit Jones and went into touch on the far side of the field.
Final score:
Southend United 2-0 Exeter City
COMMENTS
Exeter City are getting worse. Despite beating Watford and Reading, both away, they have lost to Brighton (twice), Luton, Swindon Town, and now Southend. The "Shrimpers" played much better than their position in the League suggests, but this series of defeats has put Exeter back to within four places of the bottom after they had previously climbed to a position just below the middle of the table.
Southend won today by their dash and determination, and scored two early goals. Apart from their forwards Emery was the best half back on the field and Murray an excellent back. Childs, on his first appearance, showed great promise in the attack, the quickness at which he centred causing much trouble to the City defence. Teams :
SOUTHEND:
Toone; Murray, and Thomson; Emery, Owen, and McLellan; Brown, Frost, King, Wright, and Childs.

CITY:
Crossthwaite; Crelley, and Jones; Atkinson, Ambler, and Hartley; Copestake, Watson, Green, Bell, and Garside.

Referee: Mr F.W.Barton, of Ealing.
