SOUTHERN LEAGUE:
LEYTON v EXETER CITY.
To most of the spectators at Leyton it came as a great surprise to learn that their International forward, W.T.Renneville, who was a home production, had been transferred to Aston Villa, and therefore could not assist his club against Exeter City.
Leyton: Whitbourne; Newton, Longworth; Gray, Morrison, Diss; Durrant, Buchanan, Shanks, Ryder, and Kirwan.
Exeter:- Crossthwaite; Crelley, Jones; Atkinson, Ambler, Hartley; Copestake, Watson, McGuigan, Bell, and Garside.
One of the features of a disappointing game was the fine running and centring of Kirwan, the Irish International, who has in turn assisted Everton, Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea, and Clyde. Kirwan also possesses a cup-winners' medal, having played at outside-left for the "Spurs" in the final tie of 1901.
Nothing was scored in today's match for close on half an hour. At a shot at random by Diss from near the half-way line went this point into the top corner of the Exeter net. The finest piece of play seen in the entire match occurred five minutes later, in which Buchanan played a prominent part, and resulted in Kirwan firing in a terrific drive which gave Crossthwaite, who had been kept very busy, no chance whatsoever.
Half-time: Leyton 2-0, Exeter City.
Another goal followed from the foot of Buchanan soon after crossing over, and the chief credit was due to Kirwan, who dropped the ball with unerring accuracy from close to the corner flag in front of the posts. Ryder then utilised another beautiful centre from the old Tottenham winger, and a few minutes later Shanks headed through an equally accurate pass from the other wing. Bell then scored for Exeter.
Final score:
Leyton 5-1 Exeter City
