Torquay District v Exeter City

Wednesday, September 28th 1910.

FRIENDLY MATCH.

Torquay District v Exeter City

Although Exeter City took their full Southern League side to Torquay for an exhibition match against a District XI, there was only a small attendance at the Recreation Ground.
Teams:
Torquay District
Crute (Babbacombe) goal
Burbeck (Babbacombe) right back
Hill (Torquay Town) left back
Udranfski (Babbacombe) right half Deane (Torquay Town) centre half
Simmons (Torquay Town) left half
Singlehurst (Torquay) outside right Germain (Torquay Town) inside right
Gilchrist (Babbacombe) centre forward Evans (Torquay Town) inside left
Frayn (Babbacombe) outside left
Exeter City
Whittaker
Evans Coates
Bassett Pratt Prideaux
Parnell Hughes James Bell Garside.

James kicked off, Whittaker having been beaten in the toss, and in Exeter's first attack Hughes tested Crute with a good shot, which the goalkeeper saved. The City piled on the pressure, their quick passing being too much for the amateurs to cope with, but Burbeck broke up one attack and passed to Singlehurst, he in turn being checked by Coates. Parnell got away in a fast sprint up the wing, cut in towards the goal and beat Crute with a fast curling shot. Then Crute saved from James, but could only push the ball out to Hughes, who was left with a simple task to score Exeter's second goal. Germain was injured in colliding with Exeter's Evans, and had to retire, but resumed in five minutes. Shortly before half-time James scored the City's third goal. Bell added to Exeter's total in the second half, beating Crute all ends up with a lightning shot into the top of the net. The City thus won by four goals to nil, but had they exerted themselves to the full a much higher score would have accrued.
