Southern League
Crystal Palace (a)
Easter Monday, April 17th 1911.
SOUTHERN LEAGUE:
CRYSTAL PALACE v EXETER CITY.
Played in brilliant sunshine at the Crystal Palace, Sydenham, with an enormous crowd of over 20,000 in attendance. Watson won the toss, and the game was started by Williams, against the sun. The ball was lively on the hard surface, and play was scrappy at the outset. The Palace were the first to settle down, and after threatening for some time a hefty shot from Hewitt took Whittaker right off his feet, and the Exeter goal only escaped through the absence of the other Palace forwards as the ball bounced clear. Ten minutes after the change of ends the City defence was slow in clearing, and Garratt put in a centre which was converted by Woodhouse, from about eight yards out. Woodhouse scored again in another ten minutes, but was adjudged to have used his arm to get the ball into the net, and the point was disallowed.
