Exeter City failed to make it three successive away wins in the North when they were soundly beaten at Workington, it was a disappointing performance from Exeter with too much bad passing, Workington were ahead after only five minutes and scored again twice in the second half, Keith Harvey and Cecil Sayth had their names taken, as did two Workington playersSmyth indeed was lucky not to be sent off after he was again severely spoken to by the referee.

Griffin scored from close range in the 5th minute after Peter Shearing had failed to hold a cross shot, City almost equalised in the 23rd minute when Dave Pleat's shot was blocked by Wilson, but it was nearly all Workington as they pressed hard for a second goal, They had to wait until the 51st minute when Tinnion hit a good shot from 25 yards into the net,

A short spell of attacking from City, resulted in two corners, one of which was cleared after an almighty goalmouth scramble, There was further trouble for Exeter in the 72nd minute when Workington scored a third goal, Holliday played a ball inside to Tyrer, and Peter Shearing was again beaten from 25 yards, In the final 10 minutes play became very scrappy and resulted in unneccessary fouls from both sides,

Match Summary

An early goal by Workington seemed to knock the stuffing out of Exeter and although we held the home side for the remainder of the first half we seldom looked like pulling the game out of the fire, and Workington rattled in a couple more goals after the interval. Two of our players had their names taken, but this was certainly not a rough game. It was, however, a game we shall prefer to forget. We never get going and were guilty of far too many mistakes.

FRIDAY NOVEMBER 1968.

WHATLING CAN GO.

Keith Whatling, Exeter City's 21 year old left winger has been placed on the transfer list at his own request, The directors granted his application at last nights board meeting, He has asked for a move because he feels his opportunities are limited, Whatling joined Exeter from Ipswich Town in June 1967, He has made a limited number of league appearances for City, but was out for a long time with a knee injury, which needed a cartilage operation this year.

CITY ENQUIRE AFTER ROWLANDS.

Exeter City manager Frank Broome contacted his opposite number at Torquay United Frank O'Farrell, enquiring about 23 year old centre forward John Rowlands, and the possibility of a transfer to City. Rowlands joined Torquay from Mansfield Town in the close season and has scored five goals so far. It is understood that Exeter and Torquay are unable to agree terms for the player.
