SATURDAY 29th MARCH 1969.

SIX GAMES WITHOUT DEFEAT.

EXETER CITY 0-0  DONCASTER ROVERS

Exeter Team
Shearing; Smyth, Blain; Balson, Newman, Curtis; Pleat, Binney, Wingate, Mitten, Whatling.

Attendance; 6,641.

The battle for safety on the bottom rungs of Division Four is hotting up. No team can afford to drop home points as City did, Having said that Exeter have now gone six games without defeat and Doncaster were five points clear at the top of the table, near certainties for promotion, Doncaster were a big strong side, tight in defence and for long spells in the second half they had Exeter under heavy pressureCity kept going though and came back into the game more in the closing stages. Exeter had their best spell in the opening 20 minutes, Keith Whatling had a header cleared off the line and Dermot Curtis twice fired into the side netting, The visitors gradually took a grip on the game and came more into the picture. In the second half they pushed Exeter back for much of the time and in three hectic minutes, John Newman and Mike Balson both cleared off the line, while Briggs rattled the City crossbar, Exeter survived and in the closing minutes almost scored when Dermot Curtis put in a 25 yard drive that whistled just wide,

Match Summary

One of the biggest crowds of the season for a League game, 6,641, saw the City give a creditable performance against the Fourth Division's leading team. If we had been able to get the ball into the net when we were at our best early on we might have produced a sur prise result, but Doncaster proved why they are booked for promotion - they were cool in defence and could break quickly in attack. Dermot Curtis went close to scoring twice in that early spell, and Keith Whatling also had a header cleared off the line. A lot of credit is due to our defence for holding the Rovers when they produced their most fluent attacking foot ball during the second half.
