Colchester United ended Exeter City's fine run and it was revenge for the Essex side, as it was City that knocked them out of the F.A, Cup at Layer Road earlier this season, Exeter did not play well, in fact it was a poor all round performanceCity often looked disorganised and never really got into the game. They did not ever really look like scoring, There were mistakes being made in the City defence and Colchester had plenty of chances which if taken would have won them the game quite comfortably, Peter Shearing was kept busy making several saves as Colchester had by far the bigger percentage of the game, Jinay Blain and Cecil Sayth had to make goalline clearances as City defended.. The only goal of the game came in the 35th minute when Shearing parried a shot from Simpson, and Light following up scored easily. Exeter could not complain for they wre hardly ever in the match, City vere rarely seen as an attacking force and an all round improvement is needed if they are to stay clear of re-election places.
Match Summary
City did well to hold one of the best sides in the Fourth Division to a narrow 1-0 victory on their own ground and men like Johnny Newman, Mike Balson and Peter Shearing put in a lot of both brilliant and hard defensive work to prevent the home side from turning their mid-field superiority into more goals. We were under pressure for 75 per cent of the game and it was not until near the end that we came back to try and level the goal which Danny Light had scored for Colchester shortly before the interval.
