Two scrappy goals sank Exeter City, but had they taken their chances early on then it would have been a lot closer, While the standard was never high, largely because of a lively ball and a hard pitch, it was Swansea who did most of the attacking, In fact it was only the coolness and solid defensive work of John Newman and first class anticipation by Peter Shearing that prevented the Welsh side from scoring early on, With Swansea's back line establishing authority in midfield, City's forwards had limited scope, In the 41st minute Gomersall hit a free kick into the crowded Exeter penalty area, Jimmy Blain stuck out his foot in a desparate effort to clear and turned the ball into his own net past the helpless Shearing, Swansea were mostly in command and deserved their lead, City became a little more adventurous after the interval but could make no impression on the Welsh defence. In the 72nd minute Herbie Williams settled the issue for Swansea when his shot cannoned off Campbell Crawford into the net.
