Here were two contrasting sides. While Exeter's attacks were far too slow and deliberate with too many forwards stand ing still instead of running on or off the ball and using the open spaces intelligently, Crewe Alexandra scored goals with speed, directness, and the minimum of fuss or frills. The contrast certainly highlighted Exeter's weakness in finishing. Crewe were two up in 13 minutes through Archer and Stott, Keith Whatling reduced our arrears with a fine shot in the 35th minute, but in the second half Crewe opened up some shocking gaps in our defence to score two more through Regan and Bradshaw.
