Halifax Town were a hard side in a game of near misses and chances. The City had more opportunities but failed to take them and there were a couple of occasions when perhaps they were a little unlucky, Even so this was a patchy sort of display by City. At times they played some constructive football, on other occasions they made mistake and were slow to build up towards the Halifax defence, In the City defence Jimmy Blain and Cecil Smyth had good games. Up front young Keith Whatling worked and chased hard throughout the game, but at times he lacked support, Both sides came close to breaking the deadlock, White in the Halifax goal saved brilliantly from Micky Fudge and Dermot Curtis, whilst Smith had a tremendous drive saved by John Smout, City had more of the game, Twice Burce Stuckey almost scored, only to be robbed at the last split second by desparate clearances from RussellIt was a game Exeter could have wonThere were chances there but they were not turned into goals,
Match Summary
This was one of those games which could have gone either way. Plenty of people will say that City should have won, but equally Halifax had their chances to have beaten us. Even so it was a fairly lively an with City putting up a rather patchy performance at times they looked very good, and at others they were slow and not very effective. Exeter did have more concrete chances at goal, although they had to contend with some very fine saves from Halifax 'keeper Malcolm White.
