Exeter City's drawn game with Wrexham was watched by the Bishop of Exeter who stood on the big bank, He moved to the directors box in the second half, At one stage it looked as if Wrexham were going to win, In the first half City were poor apart from a shot brilliantly saved by Livsey from Micky Fudge. They did not creat many chances,
Wrexham were without doubt the better side until the interval. They were a goal to the good through Kinsey, then came the transformation, Jimmy Blain pushed up into the forward line and immediately instilled more life into the attack. City scored twice in 20 minutes, Bruce Stuckey got the first and appropriately Blain the second. It seemed as if City might hang on and register a useful victory, But with 10 minutes to go Wrexham got the equaliser and what bad luck it was for Ernie Wilkinson who diverted a shot from Stacey into his own net when trying to clear. After the match the Bishop expressed his disappointment at the small attendance,
Match Report 2
Exeter 2 Wrexham 2
If ever a footballer lives up to the term "utility player" it is Exeter City's Jimmy Blain "Sweeper" in the first half, he was switched to centre forward in the second. It was a move that almost brought City victory, for Blain has quality wherever he plays. In a first half which saw Exeter struggling Blain more than once got them out of trouble. Even so, they were trailing 1-0 at half time when manager Frank Broome decided to move Blain up to smarten the attack. From a disjointed and scrappy first-half side Exeter were transformed into a team that fought hard and played well enough to take the lead. Only a piece of bad luck for wing half Ernie Wilkinson stopped them gaining their second home win of the season. In trying to clear a dangerous shot, Wilkinson headed into his own net. But Wrexham could claim this equalising goal was only justice. They certainly had the better of the first half, and missed two glorious chances that could have given them an impregnable lead. Wrexham's first goal came when centre-forward Roy Smith tried to push a pass to inside-left Albert Kinsey. Wilkinson went to clear, but did not connect properly, and Kinsey took a snap chance. Ten minutes after the start of the second-half a blistering drive from Bruce Stuckey was blocked on the line by Steve Stacey, but Stuckey followed up and netted the rebound. Soon afterwards Mickey Fudge made a clever break, wove through the Wrexham defence and presented Blain with an easy goal. With 10 minutes to go Wrexham left-back Steve Stacey fired a tremendous shot that went in via Wilkinson.
