Exeter City made far too many mistakes and they were punished for them. After just 53 seconds Jimmy Blain miskicked and Ross nipped into score, Worse was to follow for in the 9th minute Cliff Huxford should have cleared another attack, but he didn't and Brentford scored again, In the 39th minute Ernie Wilkinson headed an own goal, and the fourth goal for Brentford came two minutes before half time when John Smout misjudged a header, The third goal of the match came in the 13th minute, but this time it was Exeter who scored through Micky Fudge, he took it well, for there was not a lot of room to move in, Fudge was certainly City's best forward, Alan Banks had a quiet return to the side but we all know what he is capable of and no doubt he will play better than this, Huxford and Dermot Curtis did not have good games in midfield and Jimmy Blain had a poor match, In the middle of defence John Newman took time to settle down but improved in the second half, His experience is going to make a lot of difference but unless City stop making these silly mistakes they will remain at the bottom of the division,
Griffin Park has never been a very happy hunting ground for the City for we have lost all but one of our 10 post war visits, but it is a long time since we have had such a disappointing afternoon there as in this game. Lawther opened the scoring within two minutes of the start and Ross got their second goal soon afterwards. Our hopes were raised when Micky Fudge reduced the arrears with a goal in the 12th minute but Ernie Wilkinson put one through his own goal and Brentford were leading 4-1 at the interval with another by Lawther. Smout made some good saves in the second half and Brentford could only add one more through Docherty.
