Only 19 minutes had gone and Exeter were winning 3-1 against fellow strugglers Notts County, They had everything in their favour and although it was still early in the game, City were looking set for two badly needed points. But in a short spell before half time the scene completely changed. In a space of two minutes County scored twice to get back on teras. There was no more scoring in the match and City dropped another home point, Campbell Crawford got Exeter's first goal after 5 minutes from a free kick, Five minutes later Stuart Hart got a second when Rose, the County keeper, failed to hold the City winger's shot, Farmer pulled a goal back in the 18th minute, but almost immediately Jimmy Blain got another after a Hart-Dermot Curtis move, Gibson and Weaver put County, back in the picture in the 40th and 41st minutes, City really threw the game away, If only Alan Banks shot had not been cleared off the line shortly before County's comeback, they would have gone onto a convincing victory. Perhaps there were signs of a City improvement at some stages of the game, but they should never have allowed their lead to slip away as they did,

Match Summary
TWO goals in ten minutes, Alan Banks back at St. James' Park bringing vitality and life to the Exeter attack, and the whole side producing crisp, constructive Soccer. That was the position shortly before half-time. It looked like being Exeter's night. But dramatically the picture changed. Within five minutes of half time. Notts County were back on level terms and the game turned into a real battle for the vital goal in the second half. So important was that goal that a lot of the fluency and quality of the first half disappeared. Exeter still had the edge, but not having got back on terms were in no mood to concede any more goals. The arguments had started even before the 4,000 crowd left St. James' Park. Did Exeter throw the game away because of mistakes, or should Notts get full credit for the draw because of the way they refused to give up, and the way in which they snatched those two all-important chances in the 40th and 43rd minutes. But whatever the answer-and certainly after being 3-1 in the lead, the Exeter defence did make mistakes the game produced plenty of lively Soccer, and no one ought to grumble about seeing six goals. Exeter started the match with style and purpose. Banks and centre-forward Dermott Curtis, re united in the forward line, looked capable of hitting off the combi nation they have produced so suc cessfully in the past. But Notts were a deceptive side. They did not produce such attractive Soccer Exeter's first goal came from a free kick. Campbell Crawford took it on the edge of the penalty area and hit a beauty into the net.
