EXETER CITY created enough chances in this bottom-of the-Fourth Division clash at York on Saturday, but they failed to take advantage of them and this defeat puts them back at the foot of the table. They had their share of the play, but when it came to finishing they were sadly out of touch. York were much sharper in front of goal and this was their fourth successive home victory. After inside-right Ross had given York the lead in the 11th minute with an unexpected 30 yard shot the ball just touched left-half Johnny Newman before beating goalkeeper John Smout Exeter had a number of chances to come back into the game and even take the lead. But they were all wasted. Right winger Stuart Hart shot right across the goal from only a few yards: Alan Banks twice failed with the kind of chances he normally accepts; and centre forward Dermot Curtis also missed a near goal. On two of these occasions the ball was scrambled clear by goal keeper Walker and left-back Turner, but they were the vital opportunities that could have made a difference to the game. With these chances gone, York went farther ahead just before half-time through centre-forward MacDougall after a good run by right-winger Horrey. Even in the second half Exeter had their fair share of the ball, but their lack of snap in and around the penalty area was still evident. York, however, were not finished, and they got their third goal early in the second half from outside-left Provan. Banks failed to reach a bouncing ball in the York penalty area, and right-half Jimmy Blain was only inches wide with a good effort. As the game reached its closing stages York still looked dangerous, and two minutes from the end right-half Burrows made it four. But it could have been a different result if Exeter had utilised their chances, particularly those in the first half.
2nd Match Report
EXETER FUMBLE CHANCES
(by ANDREW EVANS)
BOTH MANAGERS were in agreement on one point after the game. Exeter should have been ahead at the interval even if they didn't deserve to take both points in the final analysis. As it was York took their chances in style to bring their goal total to 14 in the past four home matches. It was a down the middle move which gave York a deserved lead in the 11th minute. MacDougall headed the ball to Ross, who scored with a dipping shot from 25 yards. This was the point at which York should have been piling on the agony, but they lost their grip for a time and slack defen sive covering presented Exeter with two good first-half chances. First Hart mishit from six yards out, then Banks had a close-range shot stopped on the line and squandered another sitter when he hesitated long enough for Mike Walker to smother the ball. Cashing in on this good fortune, York increased their lead in the 40th minute. Horrey ran half the length of the field and his cross. provided MacDougall with a simple goal. York made it safe after 55 minutes when Spencer put a low ball into a crowd of players and Provan was the quickest to react. with a goal from close range, York had 75 per cent of the possession in the final quarter but they could not go further ahead until a minute from the end. Then Provan set the ball up for Burrows to score.
