SMOUT HAS HIS WORK CUT OUT
by IAN PETERS
Barnsley 2 Exeter 1
EXETER WENT ahead in the 21st minute when goalkeeper Roy Ironside allowed the simplest of shots to pass over his head from 40 yards. Then Barnsley hammered, away at the Exeter defence without success until the 58th minute when the equaliser was forced.
City's goal came when Barnsley winger Bob Earnshaw's tackle did not stop Exeter captain Johnny Newman moving forward a pace before unloosing a 40-yard shot into the goalmouth. Ironside moved to the ball, but let it drop over his head and into the net.
Courage
Exeter's defence came up with a super display of courage, backed with luck, to keep Barnsley at bay for a long time. Goalkeeper John Smout brought off a string of brilliant saves. Eventually Jimmy Robson, scoring his first goal for Barnsley since he was signed for £10,000, had the home crowd roaring over his equaliser. Brian Taylor passed to Johnny Evans, who headed the ball down for the 6ft. centre forward to scoop the ball into the net. A fantastic goal by Bob Earnshaw six minutes from the end gave Barnsley the points. Robson whisked the ball into the middle, where Earnshaw met it as it flew through the air and sent it rocketing into the net.
