Exeter City strengthened their chances of avoiding re-election with this win over York City. It was a game they simply had to win and it broke their recent dismal run of results at St James' Park, City got an important early goal but York equalised with a soft goal from a 35 yard shot which John Smout who had one of his worst games for the club fumbled, John Corr got City's second goal in the 55th minute and from then on they had more of a hold on
the game. York went close a couple of times however, and it was not until the last five minutes that Dennis Coughlin scored, to make absolutely sure of the points. York in fact should have scored in the opening minutes, but for once City took their chances and York did not. In the end Exeter got this crucial win from a mundane sort of match, in which there was some scrappy play. Cecil Smyth had another fine game at right back and Dermot Curtis who returned to the City midfield played well. City now have four games to play, and a tremendously tight finish is expected in the re-election stakes.

Corr strikes to boost flagging Exeter

by RAY COLLIER

Exeter 3 York 1

JOHNNY CORR, the Exeter City youngster with a reputation for snatching goals just when they're needed, did his stuff with perfect timing in this game. A 59th-minute goal put Exeter back in front and pepped them up just when they were flagging. Corr was one of three strikers Exeter, fielded in this all important match and all three produced results. Right winger Corr, inside forward Alan Banks, and centre forward Dennis Coughlin were the men Exeter relied on to get the goals and, apart from Banks, they did. In fact, it was because Banks was virtually sure to score and was fouled, that Exeter got the penalty that put them in the lead early on.

Pulled down
Exeter's first goal came after 10 minutes. A Mike Balson Coughlin move opened up the chance for Banks and he looked certain to score. But before he could get in his shot. he was pulled down in the area. Jimmy Blain took the penalty and scored. But the goal was not to be the signal for a runaway win by Exeter. York were swapping attack for attack and in the 34th minute they equalised. Stuart Alderson, on the right wing, let fly with a 35-yard drive and, although John Smouth touched the ball. he could not hold it. After that Exeter faded badly until Corr put new life into them with his quickly taken goal. following up fast to a cross from Coughlin. Five minutes from the end Coughlin put the issue beyond doubt. From a free kick taken by skipper Johnny Newman. Dermot Curtis carved an opening and laid on a fine chance for Coughlin.
