The end! The curtain has finally fallen at St James' Park and Exeter City are safe, but only just, Now we must hope for better things to come after a poor and disappointing season at Exeter, It was not until a few minutes to 5 o'clock that City knew they had escaped re-election, That was when the news came through that York City had lost at Wrexham, Victory for York would have sent Exeter into the bottom four. City could only draw with Darlington, their third successive goalles draw at home and finished the season with an unbeaten run of seven games, six of which were drawn, It was a disappointing game and generally Exeter did not play very well, Both sides could have scored at least onceMike Balson shot too high when in good position, In the second half Exeter made mistakes as they began to look over anxious

Exeter safe-at last
by RAY COLLIER

FRANK BROOME, Exeter City manager had to wait 15 minutes after this game to learn whether or not his side had to apply for re-election to the Fourth Division. And when the news came through that York City had lost and Exeter were safe he breathed a sigh of relief. But had Exeter's forward line been sharper they could have saved everyone the anxiety. Exeter had enough chances to win, but it was the usual story they could not finish. Exeter did not have the bite to open up Darlington's defence, and their best first-half efforts came from winger Johnny Corr, who after a glorious run, shot inches over the top, and from inside left Campbell Crawford, who seemed certain to put Exeter ahead but his shot curled outside the post at the last second.

The final whistle went and immediately young supporters swarmed onto the pitch chanting - "We've won the Cup" - after Exeter had beaten their Devon rivals Plymouth Argyle. So after a dismal League season, City have one trophy on the shelf and there can be no doubt that they deserved their success. Argyle looked a poor side, but it was a good game to complete Exeter's season, and this was certainly a better City than what we have been seeing in recent weeks, Alan Banks struck first in the 35th minute with a well taken shot and again 20 minutes later, moving onto a rebound off the crossbar, following a shot from John Corr, City could have scored more, Banks missed two opportunities. Micky Fudge also had a couple of chances, he hit the post 3 minutes before half time, City's approach work was crisp with plenty of good runningExeter had St Lukes College player, Dave Collyer in goal but he had little to do,
