Exeter City v Aldershot

What the papers said!

Exeter City 1, Aldershot 0

It was from a Scott corner in the fourth minute that Exeter won the game. Fred Binney was the man who got the goal with a header when he was left free in the penalty area. But one of the main reasons why Aldershot did not leave Devon with at least a point was the performance of Exeter centre half Jimmy Giles the former Aldershot player who joined Exeter two seasons ago for £3,500. Giles had an outstanding game in Exeter's back four, and he was well supported by Mike Balson and goalkeeper Bob Wilson. Between them these three kept Aldershot out, although the majority of Wilson's work was confined to collecting crosses. But Giles in particular and Balson were everywhere as Aldershot moved forward impressively. Had they scored in the first half Alder shot might well have gone on to take two points. Despite their pres sure through some neat and tidy midfield play, they never really ex posed Exeter at the back.
