Match 11
25th September 1972
Darlington (a)
MONDAY 25th SEPTEMBER 1972.
SOGGY SOCCER FROM EXETER.
DARLINGTON 0. Adams; Nattress, Carr; Lees, Barker, Wright; Holbrook, Harding, Burlureaux, Sinclair, Sproates,
EXETER CITY 0. Wilson; Crawford, Blain; Clapham, Giles, Balson; Morrin, Binney, Plumb, Wingate, (Stacey), Scott, Attendance: 1,374.
Although Exeter brought home a point from their long expedition to the North East and moved into third place in the Fourth Division, they can have little cause for satisfaction after this match. Thier only real attack on the Darlington goal came in the 80th minute when Dick Plumb shot hard from 15 yards and forced Aadams to save for a corner, Had he scored it would have been a grave injustice as neither side really deserved victory. The game was frankly, dull, and gave the pathetically low attendance little to cheer about, The only major incident was caused by a small fire in the main stand in the first half, but even that was quickly put out with a bucket of water, Early on the Exeter defence came under some pressure, Jimmy Giles clearing a shot from Sproates off the line. But Bob Wilson was rarely troubled by the Darlington attack which relied on long shots which were capably and easily dealt with, In reply Exeter scarcely ventured outside their own half, and when they did they showed little prospect of scoring. After half time Steve Stacey came on for John Wingate, but his presence made little difference, Fred Binney never looked like one of the Division's leading scorers, and the final whistle came as a welcome relief, Certainly this was not the sort of soccer to bring the spectators back to the game.
