14th October 1972
Football League
Exeter 1-0 Hereford

What the papers said!

Hereford Evening News:
The goal followed a mighty boot-up field by Exeter's 'keeper, Bob Wilson which bounced deep in United's half. Tucker should have made a decision, either to head back to Icke or to either side of him. But he hesitated and Icke advanced to wards him, only to find himself helpless as Exeter's Alan Banks nipped in between them for a simple goal. Meanwhile Exeter kept up their fair share of pressure. Giles was just wide with a powerful 30-yarder and there were a couple of tremendous scrambles in the visitors' goalmouth shortly before the break when Exeter went close to increasing their lead.

Birmingham Daily Post:
No-goals United
Exeter 1, Hereford 0.
Hereford's lack of fire power in attack-they have failed to score in five of their last six games-is now giving cause for serious concern. Player- manager Colin Addison, who dropped himself for the club's mid-week match at Cambridge and also missed this game at Exeter, has rung the changes up front without success. And it now looks as if he will have to step up his search for a known goal-scorer if Hereford are to move out of the bottom four. To some extent the team's attack has been built round Ivan Hollett, who cost Hereford £2,000 in January. But he has yet to prove himself. Hereford missed the services of George Johnston, their top marksman, who received treatment for minor injuries when involved in a road accident on his way to the match. He is the only player to score in their last ten matches and might have succeeded where players like Ken Wallace, Colin Hall and Colin Tavener failed. Hereford, in fact, were fortunate that they did not need a substitute because the news of Johnston's accident came too late to dispatch another player to Exeter, and they had only the bare 11 available. Exeter, unbeaten at home, won the game with an eighth-minute goal when Alan Banks nipped in to head home the ball at the second bounce from a Bob Wilson clearance while Hereford centre-half Billy Tucker and goalkeeper David Icke hesitated.
