Football League
Exeter 2-0 Lincoln
What the papers said
LINCOLNSHIRE ECHO
Generally City's shooting was not sufficiently powerful to worry Wilson, who did plenty of good work in cutting out a number of high balls into the goal mouth. Unbeaten at home this season, where they have dropped only one point, Exeter took the lead as a result of their second corner of the match. From the left, a near post cross was backheaded across the goal, leaving striker Fred Binney with a clear target. Holme's attempt to stop a close range header appeared at first to have succeeded as he grasped the ball. But as he fell, the Lincoln goalkeeper obviously thought he was carrying the ball over the line, and in trying to push it round a post he released his grip and the ball went into the net. The goal boosted Exeter's confidence sky high, and for a time they made Lincoln fight hard to stay in the match at all. It all became largely academic when Exeter scored again in the 70th minute from another set piece. McMahon gave away an unneces sary free kick to the left of the goal and, when Gibson placed his cross into the middle, Binney was given room by Branston in which to head for goal. Facing the net, and right on the line, Peden made a magnificent clearance to head the ball away, but it ran out to Wingate, who hit a first-time shot into the net through a ruck of legs.
