City manager John Newman will be looking for a better footballing performance than in this defeat as Exeter attempt to go back into the Third Division again for the first time in nine years, City did not show the form that they are capable of. They worked and fought hard in a tough, bruising battle at Stockport, but they did not put enough together as a unit and failed to create anything. Stockport looked the more positive side and deserved to win on the greasy Edgeley Park surface, Exeter were not stringing enough moves or passes together, and apart from one or two half chances they did not look like scoring. Stockport's 21st minute goal was enough to win the game for them. Spratt hit a high through ball and Bingham moved forward smartly to beaf Bob Wilson with a header as the keeper came off his line. For a spell at the start of the second half Exeter went at Stockport with much more authority. A goal at that stage could well have upset the home side, but it did not come and Stockport came back again to play the more dominant role, City almost snatched a point when Dave Gibson had a shot which was only saved at the second attempt by Ogley, Exeter were fortunate to survive a penalty appeal, the referee being lenient to both sides on several occasions.
