Scorers Newport Brown, Passey, Exeter's hopes of promotion are now well and truly derailed as they cashed to defeat. This takes their depressing run of games without a win to nine, Newport County whipped into shape by the elegant Summerhayes midfield drive. They were 2-0 up in less than half an hour. They were held off a bigger score by the performance of Allan Clarke and Jimmy Giles who both stood out in a tottewring defence, Strangely Exeter had the best chance of the game in the 10th minute, Fred Binney who hardly had a kick against the smooth working Aizlewood, but he managed to set up a chance for John Wingate who promptly blasted over from 6 yards, That was almost the last clear look City had of the Newport goal, Aizlewood took a free kick after 20 minutes and Brown hit a rising shot into the Exeter net via the Crossbar. Summerhayes might have been rewarded for his creative work with a goal, but Clarke made a brilliant save from his long range shot, County's second goal came spectacularly from Passey. He intercepted on the halfway line, ran 50 yards, worked a one two with Screen, and belted a perfect shot past Clarke, The persistent rain made conditions difficult on the notoriously muddy Newport pitch in the second half, but City could make no impression against a hard working home side.
