Barnsley (a)

FRIDAY 6th APRIL 1973.

Barnsley's new manager Jim ley put in a spot of unofficial overtime last night and steered his side on to a point-saving course which, if justice had been done, would have brought even more reward. When his side, despite having the greater share of the ball, were a goal down at half-time, Iley left his seat in the directors' box for a dressing room chat with the players he was not supposed to meet until Monday morning. Afterwards. Iley told me "1 was pleasantly surprised by the overall standards These lads can play but they need organising. In the first half they were like a ship without a rudder and it was a case of sorting out one or two things. "They certainly looked good in the second half and the lads are convinced they should have had a penalty in that late pressure. Nonetheless, a point against a side which has been running for promotion all season while themselves have been look ing laded of late was 2 worthwhile achievement.

Moreover Barnsley, particularly in that second half played their most entertaining football for weeks and to cap it ail Mick Butler who scored his sixth goal in nine League outings. might well have had a hatrick with normal luck

The writing looked to be on the wall for Barnsley when Exeter stole an early lead as Fred Binney headed home Mike Baison's free kick yet before the break O'Conner had planted a header against the bar, seen another shot Clarke and other efforts by Greenwood and Winstanley had gone close.

Goals:
Binney (Exeter) 9minutes
Butler minutes: (Barnsley) 60 minutes.
