Match 02
26th August 1963
Carlisle v Exeter City

Western League
Bridgewater (h)

CITY GET A DRENCHING AND A BEATING.

CARLISLE UNITED 3
(Livingstone, McIlmoyle 2)

EXETER CITY 0

MONDAY AUGUST 26TH 1963
AT CARLISLE.

There was one simple reason for Exeter City's beating at Carlisle on Monday evening, the home team was just too good for them. And as they trudged wearily out of the midsummer monsoon that had lashed at them almost all through the game, they just had to be thankful that they had not gone down by three or four more goals. Apart from the fact that it might have caused an extra couple of mistakes the blinding rainstorm which had bowled along the pitch could not be blamed. For Carlisle got one goal playing with it in the first half and two against it in the second.

Carlisle United: Dean; Neil and Caldwell; Oliphant, Marsden, and McConnell; Lornie, McIlmoyle, Livingstone, Davies, and Kirkup.

Exeter City:- Barnett; Smyth and Patrick; Mitchell, Harvey, and Anderson; Rees, Henderson, Curtis, Edgar, and Spiers.

There is no doubt that Carlisle were a vastly superior team, and few other sides in the Fourth Division would have stood up to them any better than Exeter did. But the man who really tormented the City was the former Leicester City inside-right Hugh McIlmolye, and it was he who got two of the three goals.

Match Report 2

Attendance 6,454,

There was one simple reason for City's beating Carlisle were just too good for them. As they trudged miserably out of the midsummer monsoon which had lashed them almost all through the game, City had to be thankful they had not gone down by six or seven goals. Almost everyone in the City team hit a bad patch at the same time and Carlisle were too good a side not to take advantage of it. The man who really tormented Exeter, was Mcllmoyle, darting, thrusting and probing his way in and around the defence, he got all three goals in the 10th, 65th and 77th minutes. Carlisle were a very good side. They moved intelligently and quickly with the ball and they snapped hungrily at every Scoring possibility, the 40th Linute Henderson cracked in a shot which Dean did well to push out but apart from that City never looked like scoringThe inside forwards and wingers were so ineffective that a lot of the Carlisle danger came from their defence who had the space to move up into the attack, The City plan fell to pieces because the team could never settle down to it, for most of the first half the forwards did not receive a decent pass,

CITY RESERVES O BRIDGWATER 2
AT EXETER.

Played Wednesday August 28th at St James's Park. The young Exeter City Reserves side learned in this match just how wide is the gulf between the best and worst teams in the Western League. On Saturday they were able to whip a rather shabby Portland side by five goals to two, whereas only four days later the well-drilled Bridgwater combination handed them a two - nil beating.
