COMBINATION PLAY GIVES CITY THEIR FIRST HOME GOAL.

Arnold Mitchell's 400th League apperance.

EXETER CITY (Curtis) 1

CARLISLE UNITED 0.

Played on Wednesday September 11th: A slashing crossfield ball to Graham Rees from George Ley, a quick pass inside to Arnold Mitchell, a transfer equally quick to Dermot Curtis, and a sudden shot from the Irish centre, and Exeter City had Carlisle beaten in the very first minute of the game.

People may deride the Fourth Division, but this was combination play as good as can be seen anywhere.

Exeter City:- Barnett; Smyth and MacDonald; Mitchell, Harvey, and Anderson; Rees, Henderson, Curtis, Grace, and Ley.

Carlisle United: Dean; Neil and Caldwell; Thompson, Twentyman, and McConnell; Taylor, McIlmoyle, Livingstone, Davies, and Johnstone.

Referee:- Mr P.Rhodes of Dringhouses.

Linesmen
: Messrs P.J.Woodwart and W.Summerhayes.

Attendance 5,671.

Most of the other 89 minutes were almost as good value for money as the crowd of 5,671 spectators would doubtless agree. The City moved quickly and slickly when they were going forward and Carlisle contributed their share with some very fast forward play. For Carlisle always had the potential to score, and they showed that the most in the last 15 minutes when they battered away at Exeter's goal almost constantly. But Exeter stuck to their plan and it saw them through. As it was they got their first home win of the season and stretched their defensive record to four games now without having lost a goal.
The men who stood out the most for Exeter were Curtis, Ley, Grace, Barnett, and Smyth.

  • Arnold Mitchell, the skipper, was making his 400th appearance for the City in the League.

Match Report 2.

A slashing crossfield ball from Ley to Rees, a quick pass inside to Mitchell, a transfer to Curtis and a shot from the Eire leader and Exeter City had broken Carlisle United with a goal in the first minute of the game. The goal was a picture, so were the moves that followed and should have brought a bigger score, Most of the other 89 minutes were good value for moneyThe City moved quickly and slickly and Carlisle contributed more than their fair share to the game, City were forced to defend for long spells, Carlisle always threatened to score especially in the last 15 minutes of the game when City's defence took a real battering, but they hung on for their first home win of the season and stretched their defensive record to four games without conceding a goal. It was encouraging to see so many chances being created by Exeter, Curtis, Henderson and Ley all went close, the Carlisle goal bore a charmed life at timesCurtis had his best game yet for City with Grace working like a trojan. This was a good game to win, for Carlisle are no easy side to beat, Former City winger Derek Sullivan who left St James's Park for Newport County at the end of the 1961-62 season is playing for Hereford this season, Sullivan a Welsh International spent one season at Exeter, signing from Cardiff City.
