Match 06
14th September 1963
Southport (h)

Western League
Salisbury (a)

SATURDAY 14th SEPTEMBER 1963.

CITY SLIP UP AND SOUTHPORT TAKE A POINT

EXETER CITY (Curtis) 1

SOUTHPORT (Spence) 1.

SO DRAB, SO DULL, SO DEPRESSING.

Attendance 5,335.

Drab, dull, depressing, How any team can play as well in one game as City did against Carlisle and then so horribly the next is beyond logic, They played as if they were eight goals up in a practice match instead of fighting for Fourth Division pointsIndividually they tried, collectively they were a failure. They had bits of bad luck but if they had kept going they must have scored more than once. The goal that did come was a good one. Only three men, Barnett, Henderson and Curtis touched the ball from the moment it left the City goalmouth, until the City centre forward hammered it into the net. That does not excuse the generally shabby display of a forward line who looked as if they had not played together beforeThe defence has propped up the rest of the team far too long, this state of affairs can not last for ever, City gave away the equalising goal in the 65th minute, a harmless looking cross was allowed to flaot over the defence, the ball struck a post before Spence rammed in the rebound, even so, City are not going to give away too many goals this season, but the question is, are they going to score any, openings were made, but chances were missed

Match Summary

Played on Saturday September 14th at St James's Park: Exeter would have had an easy win today if they had played like they did against Carlisle in the week. But although they led at the interval they slipped up in the second half and after several determined raids Southport got an equalising goal in the 65th minute. The City allowed their visitors, who were not a very dangerous side, far too much scope after the interval.

Exeter City: Barnett; Smyth and MacDonald; Mitchell, Harvey, and Anderson; Rees, Henderson, Curtis, Grace, and Ley.

Southport: Rollo; Cairns and Beanland; Wallace, Darvell, and Tighe; Dagger, Latham, Blore, Spence, and Brookes.

Referee:- Mr P.G. Brandwood of Kidderminster.

Even in the opening half the City played far too casually against a rather poor team, and they had a shock when Spence landed a shot on top of the net. Exeter's most dangerous raids came from Ley and Rees. Right on half time Curtis put Exeter ahead with a great goal as he latched on to Henderson's pass and shot hard and true into the net from 18 yards.

SALISBURY 3
CITY RESERVES 1
AT SALISBURY.

Western League

Exeter City Reserves have yet to win a match at Salisbury, and by half-time they had not looked capable of altering that record. Indeed, only a solid and workmanlike defence formed around George Northcott at centre half saved them from a heavier defeat than one goal to nil in that 45 minutes. The second half saw more open play, and Barry Pierce, formerly of Exeter City, and Watts scored for the home side. Spiers near the close replied for Exeter.
