CITY'S BEST START IN FIVE YEARS: ONE DEFEAT.

ALDERSHOT 0

EXETER CITY (Henderson) 1

Exeter City smashed their way onwards and upwards to their best seasons start in five years, for the few City supporters in the crowd, it was a nerve wracking, blood surging 90 minutes in which the tension or excitement never seemed to lapse. At first it seemed to be just a case of how long City could hold out as Aldershot bombarded the Exeter goal, but as the game went on, it was Aldershot who ended up struggling. City gave everything they had for those two points and they had to, for even in the last minute, Smyth kicked off the line, City clicked right back on form, Rees, Curtis, Mitchell and Grace went close to scoring in the second half spell when City were stroking the ball from man to man and the forwards were playing better than at any time before this season. The thing that really put Exeter on top was the 58th minute goal from Henderson who slashed the ball into the Alderhsot net with a first time shot. Men of the match were Smyth and Harvey who completely bottled up the home forwards, Smyth had the greatest game of his two season career, whilst Harvey was so quietly efficient.

Match Summary

Exeter City battled their way onwards and upwards to the best start of a season in five years with this 1 - 0 win. The City have been defeated only once in the first eight games. This latest win came as the result of a complete return to what has come to be called Exeter's "Carlisle form." The Aldershot forwards, who had until they faced Exeter City, scored at least one goal in every game this season, were halted by a great defence in which Smyth and Harvey were the outstanding members. The City in the first half were subjected to periods of sustained pressure, and for some time it seemed to be a question of how long they could hold out. But when Henderson scored with a cracking volley from fifteen yards early in the second half the tide turned in Exeter's favour. Grace, Rees, Mitchell, and Curtis all went close to scoring in the second half spell when the City were stroking the ball around from man to man and the forwards playing better than at any previous time this season.

DERMOT CURTIS IS CITY'S FIRST INTERNATIONAL.

For the first time in the club's history, an Exeter City player has been picked to play for his country in a full International, The man who brought this honour to the club is centre forward Dermot Curtis. He wil lead the Eire attack against Austria in Vienna on September 25th, He already has 14 International caps. A number of Exeter players such as Johhny Nicholls (England) and Derek Sullivan (Wales) had represented their countries, but that was before they had joined City, The only other City player to be capped for his  country whilst on Exeter's books, was P,C,Evans, who was a centre forward with the club when he played for Wales in 1910, but that was an amateur International. Two  other City players have represented their countries as professionals, but that was not in full Internationals but "test matches" Fullback Stan Charlton who was a member of the F,A,Side which toured Australia in 1925 and inside left Harold Houghton went to Canada with the F.A, tourists in 1931,

BILL CRAWSHAW DIES.

Mr Bill Crawshaw, until 21 years ago, vice chairman of Exeter City F.C, has died in a nursing home in Exeter in his late 60s. He came to Exeter with the Army in 1919 and played a few games as an amateur for City, In the early 1920s on leaving the forces he signed professional forms for the club and played at right half for several seasons before leaving to join Accrington Stanley, Later he returned to finish his playing days at St James's Park, He became chairman of the Exeter City supporters club and was later appointed to the board of directors and then became vice chairman, a post which he held until his resignation two years ago, His enthusiasm for sport remained with him all his life and he had been both captain and president of the Exeter golf and country club.

WAGES BOOST FOR PLAYERS.

With only one defeat in their least eight games, City are hoping for a good gate against Doncaster Rovers tomorrow, the players certainly are, because the City directors have agreed to implement a bonus scheme, whereby players will receive an extra 10/- for a gate of 5,000 and 10/- for each complete 500 above that figure,
