LATE GOAL SPOILS CITY'S HOPES OF ANOTHER AWAY WIN.
HARTLEPOOLS UNITED (Brown) 1
EXETER CITY (Harvey) 1.
Saturday September 28th 1968
In bright but blustery weather there were only two thousand people present as the City took the field with high hopes of making further headway in their promotion challenge. In ten meetings of these clubs since the Fourth Division began the City had only once been beaten by Hartlepools. In an effort to introduce more punch into the attack, Exeter had Smyth, the full-back, on the right wing, Rees crossing over.
Hartlepools United:- Oakley; Wilkie and Bilcliff; Hinchcliffe, Atkinson, and Burlison; McCubbin, Fraser, Brown, Bradley, and Lithgo.
Exeter City:- Barnett; Patrick and MacDonald; Mitchell, Harvey, and Anderson; Smyth, Henderson, Curtis, Grace, and Rees.
The City had to be content with one point from their visit to the North East. After a goalless first half they went ahead 20 minutes from the end, Harvey beating Oakley at point blank range after a shot from Smyth had rebounded from the crossbar, but Brown, who is normally a full-back, equalised two minutes from time.

CITY OFFER FOR ARGYLE MAN FAILS.
Exeter City have bid for Plymouth Argyle's transfer listed forward Adrian Thorne, but had their offer turned downThorne a winger or inside forward has been under the City eye for some time. At the end of last season, he would not re-sign for Plymouth and was transfer listed at £4,500, City waited, confident that the league would reduce the fee, they did, but when City tried again for the former Brighton 25 year old, they were told no deal.
