Match 11
2nd October 1963
Aldershot (Home)

EXCITEMENT AND SKILL BUT NO GOALS.

WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 2nd 1968

EXETER CITY 0 ALDERSHOT 0

Good football, excitement, and hard, fast moving play were all the way through packed into the City v Aldershot return match. In fact there was everything except what the 7,000 fans came to see, goals. And as it is goals that count Exe ter will not be a thoroughly good promotion prospect until they begin to get mere goals, and in this match the forward line never looked like getting them.

Exeter City: Barnett; Smyth and MacDonald; Mitchell, Harvey, and Anderson; Rees, Henderson, Curtis, Grace, and Ley.

Aldershot: Jones; Thomas and Renwick; Stepney, Tyrer, and Mulgrew; Palethorpe, Kearns, Fogg, Towers, and Burton.

Much of this game was defensive for the City. With Towers picking up a lot of loose balls in midfield the Aldershot attack was often ready to swing into action. It was only the effectiveness of the City's seven-man defensive wall which broke them down and limited them to just one really dangerous shot in the whole game.

Match Report 2.

Excitement, good football and hard moving fast play. All this was packed into the game, in fact there was everything but goals, The City forward line never looked like getting them, Rees positively sparkled on the right wing and almost all the danger came from him, but he had absolutely no support and his excellent work was nearly always wasted. There was positively no punch in the middle, even allowing for the fact that, Aldershot were a good side and that their defence was tightly packedCity showed they were capable of opening up gaps, they just did not do it often or well enough, The nearest that City came to a goal was when henderson shot against a post. City played some good football, but a lot of this game was defensive for City, it was only the effectiveness of an Exeter seven man wall which broke Aldershot down and limited them to just one real shot in the whole game. Once again Smyth was the star man in a good solid defence, City always tried to work the ball out of defence rather than the long clearance up field.
