FIRST WIN IN SEVEN GAMES NOT CONVINCING.
SATURDAY OCTOBER 19TH 1963
CITY (SMYTH) 1 YORK 0
Exeter City, already showing six changes in a drastic effort to get the goals, had to make another last minute switch. Roy Patrick was taken ill with influenza and was replaced at right back by Cecil Smyth. And it was Smyth whose goal in the 24th minute gave Exeter their first win in seven games. He cleverly moved up to get possession of a throw in from Curtis, taking the ball on the edge of the York penalty area. Without a second's delay he hit the ball first time, swinging in a lobbed shot which just dropped over the head of Forgan and into the net.
Exeter City:- Barnett; Smyth and MacDonald; Rutley, Harvey, and Anderson; Rees, Curtis, Northcott, Edgar, and Phoenix.
York City:- Forgan; Baker and Heron; Woods, Jackson, and Ashworth; Gould, Wilkinson, Meecham, Rudd, and Lang.
Referee:- Mr W.Clements of West Bromwich.
Exeter City's victory was more than welcombe, but the the display of the team was far from convincing. They have not yet found the real answer to their attacking problems, although Edgar was impressive with his distribution and Northcott in his first appearance added weight and bustle to the forward line. Smyth, who scored the winning goal, was also the best defender, with MacDonald not far behind him.

GLASTONBURY 4 CITY RESERVES 4
Exeter City Reserves scored one of the quickest goals ever seen on the Glastonbury ground today. Straight from the kick-off the ball was passed from Redwood to Riding. From the winger's cross Stuckey flicked an overhead pass to the unmarked Redwood, who hammered home a first time shot before Glastonbury had touched the ball.
