Match 15
14th October 1963
Halifax ( Away)

IT'S THE SAME STORY:
CITY'S FORWARDS FAIL.

MONDAY OCTOBER 14TH

HALIFAX TOWN 2 EXETER CITY 0.

Halifax Town handed out Exeter City's second 2-0 beating of the weekend on Monday evening. But while the result was the same as at Chester the game itself was not. This time the City defence played very well all through the game, and not just for the first twenty minutes.

Halifax Town: Downsborough; Bingley and Roscoe; Jackson, Richardson, and Harrison; Taylor, Bartlett, Worthington, Carlin, and Twist.

Exeter City:- Barnett; Smyth and MacDonald; Anderson, Harvey, and Mitchell; Rees, Rutley, Henderson, Phoenix, and Ley.

Halifax, who had things almost all their own way, apart from getting a goal, in the first half, tired after the interval.
Exeter should have taken advantage of their superior fitness and stamina, but once again when put to the test, the forwards failed to capitalize on all their good approach work. Once Rees took a quick corner on the left, Smyth placed his return pass right across the Halifax goalmouth and Henderson and Ley both missed it through being too slow. Phoenix sent in a good angled shot which Downsborough tipped over the bar for another corner. Rees ran in to drive a low ball across the front of the goal about a yard out, and again Henderson's lack of speed told against him. Anderson moved up to try a long shot. It was a praiseworthy effort but the ball sailed a yard wide and too high. Meanwhile Jackson and Carlin scored for Halifax and Barnett saved a penalty kick from Jackson.

WEDNESDAY 16th OCTOBER 1963.

ONE OF THE OLD BRIGADE MET THE CITY.

When Exeter played Halifax Town on Monday night, they had a visit in the dressing room from an old City player who wishes to be remembered to his old team mates and friends at St James's Park, He is Charlie Vowles who at 73 years of age is as fit and as sprightly as ever. Charlie an inside forward joined City after leaving the sevrices in 1920 and had three seasons with the club alongside players like Joe Coleburne, Dick Pym and Jimmy Rigby.

FRIDAY 18th OCTOBER 1963.

CITY STILL TALK ON CAIRNS SIGNING.

Exeter City were hoping to have Rochdale inside forward Ron Cairns in their team tomorrow, but City chairman Mr Reg Rose said today that things have not moved as fast as they had hoped and they are still in the process of negotiation, City have agreed terms with Rochdale and if he does sign will team up again with Peter Phoenix, who Exeter signed from Rochdale just over a week ago,

GRACE TRANSFER SHOCK.

Derek Grace, City's promising 18 year old wing half has asked for a transfer, he was signed two seasons ago from Q.P.R. and has made ten appearances this season. The reasons for his request are purely personal. He has to support his mother who lives in London and he cannot do this by earning reserve team money,
