Western League
Weston (a)
CITY LOSE AT HOME:
BANKS MAKES HIS EXETER DEBUT.
SATURDAY NOVEMBER 2ND 1963:
EXETER CITY 0 ROCHDALE 1.
- Banks, height 5ft 8ins, weight 11st 41bs, born in Liverpool, was taken in hand by Liverpool F.C., in May 1958. Despite his obvious flair for getting goals (6 in 8 League appearances in two seasons) he was placed on the transfer list and went into Southern League football with Cambridge City. There he earned a big reputation as a goal-scorer, netting over 100 goals in two seasons, including one run of 23 games in which he never failed to score. The interest of several big clubs was aroused, and it was a surprise when Exeter City stepped in and paid out a club record fee to obtain Banks' signature eight days ago.
Exeter City: Barnett; Smyth and Patrick; Mitchell, Harvey, and Anderson; Rees, Banks, Curtis, Henderson, and Phoenix.
Rochdale: Burgin; Wells and Winton;
Hepton, Milburn, and Thompson;
Cairns, Richardson, Watson, Morton, and Storf.
Attendance 6249
The game began quietly with neat, easy paced football from both the teams, but when Rochdale speeded up they scored a goal. Thompson, in the same sort of form he used to show when a "Grecian," split the Exeter defence with a lovely pass to Richardson, who ran through to score a simple goal. The City delayed their effort until it was too late and Burgin had to make three brilliant saves near the end, but this still did not excuse Exeter's first home defeat of the season. Banks tried hard enough but had almost no support.
