Saturday November 16th 1963:
THE CUP: CITY THROUGH TO ROUND TWO. AFTER A SHOCK IN FIRST MINUTE.
Exeter City have got through to the second round of the F. A. Challenge Cup for the first time in the last three seasons after Shrewsbury Town had taken the lead in the first minute this afternoon at St James's Park. Exeter fought back to win by 2-1.
Exeter City:- Barnett; Smyth and MacDonald; Mitchell, Harvey, and Anderson; Rees, Northcott, Curtis, Grace, and Phoenix.
Shrewsbury Town:- Boswell; Wright and Turner; Harley, Dolby, and Hemsley; Gregson, Ross, Clarke, Brodie, and Middleton.
Referee:- Mr S.Yates of Bristol.
Linesmen: Messrs D.T.Markell and B.Grey.
Attendance 8000
The City found themselves kicking off twice in less than a minute. Shrewsbury broke down their opening move and made progress through the centre by quick inter-passing, and Middleton from twenty yards cracked home a 30-seconds goal. But the City recovered from their early shock and after Curtis had levelled the scores in the first half Anderson volleyed home the winner in the second. This game had a real Cup-tie atmosphere all the way through, and there is no doubt that the City did very well to get themselves back to equalise after losing that early goal. That they got the winning goal later on is a tribute to the team's superiority in the second half. The whole team played well, and well together, and while Northcott did not have the speed of Banks, who is "Cup-tied" having already played for Cambridge in the competition, he certainly did enough to justify his selection at inside-right.
Portland 4-3 City Reserves
Portland United beat the City Reserves at Portland by four goals to three.
