Western League
Clyst Rovers. (h)
LATE GOAL BY BANKS GIVES CITY ANOTHER WIN.
SATURDAY NOVEMBER 23RD:
NEWPORT 0
EXETER CITY (BANKS) 1.
For once this season Exeter City had some encouragement on an away ground, for about a hundred supporters had travelled up to Wales taking advantage of the special railway excursion.
Before the kick-off two minutes' silence was observed, with players of both sides lined up in front of the grandstand, in memory of the American President, John Kennedy. The players wore black arm-bands.
Newport County:- Weare; Bird and Walters; Williams, Rathbone, and Rowland; Kear, Webster, Bonson, Hunt, and Smith.
Exeter City:- Barnett; Smyth and MacDonald; Mitchell, Harvey, and Anderson; Rees, Banks, Curtis, Grace, and Phoenix.
Referee: Mr J.Mitchell, of Prescot.
Attendance 3339
These were two very valuable points for the City, and they deserved them because they established more control than Newport in a hard fought game. They tried to play football right out from the defence and it was this in the end which kept them out of trouble. Newport staged a storming finish on their own ground but it did not come off. All the City players worked hard, and there was no doubt that apart from his goal, when he nodded Smyth's centre past Weare just four minutes from time, Banks added a lot of life and penetration to the City front line.
