ANOTHER SOLID DEMONSTRATION OF THE 4-2-4 SYSTEM.
FRIDAY NOVEMBER 29TH
EXETER CITY 2 STOCKPORT COUNTY 0.
Exeter City in this match gave another solid demonstration of the 4- 2 - 4 system in action, and though often criticised by some of the crowd for falling back gave in addition further proof that it is anything but a purely defensive style of play.
In fact, they made more scoring chances for themselves than in any other two games this season put together. That they did not score from them was partly bad finishing, partly bad luck, but mostly a marvellous display of goalkeeping from Gordon Beighton. This match, played under the St James's Park floodlights on Friday evening, was brought forward so as not to clash with the All Blacks Rugby game against Devon and Cornwall on the County Ground tomorrow afternoon.
Exeter City: Barnett; Smyth and MacDonald; Mitchell, Harvey, and Anderson; Rees, Banks, Curtis, Grace, and Phoenix.
Stockport County: - Beighton; Johnston and Cuthbert; Porteous, Parry, and Ricketts; Ward, Jones, Ryden, France, and Bircumshaw.
Once again Alan Banks was the City's star forward. Well supplied by Rees and Curtis the hard-grafting Liverpudlian was always in the thick of everything and always in the Stockport goalmouth at times of any danger to the visiting team. Back in the defence the City were as sound as ever, keeping strictly to their system and keeping Stockport out. The Northern team had a good share of the play and often looked as if they were doing what they liked in the middle of the field. But in fact they were only doing just what the City wanted them to, and they discovered this each time they get to the edge of the penalty area and no farther.
